Under the Per Cent for Art Scheme St. Mary’s National School wishes to commission new visual artwork to celebrate and coincide with the construction and opening of New School.
Introduction
Last phase of St. Mary’s National School will be opened for use in April of 2015. The School was established in September 2000 following the amalgamation St. Elizabeth’s NS (originally a convent school) and Scoil na mBuachailli, Meathus Troim. Currently school is under construction with phase 1 – two storey 20 classroom school complete and already in use and single storey Special Needs Unit under development.
The Project
The aim of the commission is to provide an opportunity for artists to develop new work influenced by the history, context, and aspirations of the students, teachers, parents and community of Edgeworthstown and the surrounding region.
Projects financed under this scheme should maintain the highest level of artistic excellence, be innovative in nature and display a high level of understanding of the context of the commission.
Commission
The commission is for a piece of fixed permanent public sculpture of resilient and weather resistant material with minimal maintenance requirements. The piece of art should incorporate the old school desk and should include elements that reflect the old schools, the current environment and the future. The work is to be situated in a preselected location in the sensory garden. The proposal should also outline the art piece relationship with the building and sensory garden design. The artwork to allow for students interaction with it.
NB The cost of the piece should include relevant base and installation in the sensory garden.
The Budget
The maximum budget for commission is €34,187.00 inclusive of all artists’ fees, costs
including installation, expenses, VAT, insurance and any other charges.
