Hugh P. McGrath

Hugh P. Magrath

I have been drawing and painting for as long as I can remember, for the past twenty years I have painted in oils, acrylics, watercolours, and gouache.

In June 2014 I completed a B A (Honours) degree in Fine Art at IT Sligo, as a mature student.

In fourth year the focus of my artwork was on large scale paintings, and some printmaking. The work explores the Irish bog landscape. In this body of work my intentions are to present on canvas, a response to the metaphysical awareness of place. The feelings sensed on being present, in stillness and solitude there.

The preservation properties of the bog retains the memory of ancestral existence, the golden treasures hidden from invaders and preserved safely for centuries. The natural colour scheme and soft wet ground conditions are unique in themselves.

This specific landscape has an attraction for me, to represent as an energy filled silent visual expression on canvas, paper, or board.
